How do you properly dispute an old credit card account to eliminate it from your credit report?
I know that staying on top of your credit report is essential to establishing a better credit score and that keeping tabs on it and outdated or old delinquent credit card accounts is a step to take. I heard that if you dispute those, they can sometimes be eliminated from your credit report. Is this possible and what is the appropriate or efficient to do this?
The first thing you’d need to do is to check the statute of limitations (SOL) in your state. If an account is still within SOL then it wouldn’t be a wise move to dispute it.
As long as something is reporting “accurately” then there would be nothing to dispute. Though many times it doesn’t appear that the CRA’s or data furnishers know, or care, what accuracy is. If something is reporting inaccurately then you have a legal right to dispute that inaccuracy.
You should read through the FCRA to learn about credit reporting. You might also do some reading in the Credit Forum on the site I’ve posted in the source box.
