Do credit checks negatively affect your credit score when you have no credit history?
I’m looking for a credit card because I’m in college and i need to start building up my credit and i have applied for a few cards and have been turned down for lack of credit history. I know if a lot of companies look at your credit score it can hurt your score. Does that still happen if you have no credit score/history?
Since you don’t have any history, it won’t hurt your score. Once you do have a score, it will only be a small ding.
A massive amount of credit checks only affect 10% of your score. And the reduction is temporary. Don’t sweat it.
Try store cards like Target or a gas card.
Pay in full each month for top credit scores.
Carrying balances reduces your rating – It’s in every article I read.
After 6 months of using your store card well. Apply for a visa/mc.
One more thing. Check your reports to make sure nothing negative is on them. If you can’t get your reports thats a good thing that means that you have no credit yet, but that nothing is wrong. ANNUALCREDITREPORT.COM
forget your score- just make sure everything is right – check your score next year.

Yes. But don’t worry about it.
Credit checks have a relatively small impact on your credit score. Far more important is your history of repayment.
Your main problem now is that you’ve been turned down because you lack a credit history. So your goal should be to establish a credit history. One way to do that is with a secured credit card.
A secured credit card works like this: You deposit $x (like $500) into a savings account. In return, you receive a credit card with a $500 limit. The credit card is secured by the $500 you have in the savings account. Use that credit card. Make purchases, and pay them off. That’ll help develop your credit history.
You can also build credit in other ways. If you have some bills in your own name–phone bills (cell phone?), utility bills, etc. Yes, sometimes you need a credit card to get those, but often you don’t. So, you pay those bills regularly, and that’ll build your credit.
Hope that helps.
