I read in many places that it hurts your credit score to close accounts for many reasons. If you just leave them open and shred the cards, aren’t you setting yourself up for identity theft?

My best friend has alot of debt. She just used one of those consolidation places, using a number off the tv, to have one monthly payment and they reduced her total debt. Is this a good decision?
I have some debt and I want to do this but I am afraid my credit will be worse. My credit is already bad for past due accounts in collection status. No I wasn’t a deadbeat..I has surgery and couldn’t pay my bills and them the minimum balances kept snowballing. Some of my friends say it makes your credit worse but I think paying it off would be better than not paying it. Anyone have a real answer on this? Thanks.
I have recently paid off some negative accounts on my report and was wondering how long or what happens to your credit standings once the account is paid?
I,m looking for a way to build my credit i am already in the process of buying a car but i am wondering if there are any other ways. Thank You for your answers

I have about $30,000 in medical debt over the past 6 months. Ironically I started getting very sick within weeks of getting laid off in October 2008. I haven’t been able to make the minimum monthly payments, but have been paying some at least, when I am able to. I have heard that medical debt affects your credit differently than credit card debt and such, how does that work?

My mom used 7 credit cards, one with a higher cap than all the rest and she’s been using them for over a year.
She doesn’t know the account usernames or passwords, she just filled out and can’t remember any of them.
Will canceling the credit cards and getting new ones affect the credit history negatively? Will they get rid of all the good credit you worked up?
Thanks for your help
I want to start working on my credit score. So please tell me what the best site is and what your expierence was with it if you had any.
